Issues with electric powered boats
Electric power systems for boats are a new and innovative technology that allows for people living on lakes that do not allow internal combustion engines to enjoy many of the same pleasures as those that do. The ability to propel a Pontoon or other boat in a manner that gives satisfactory performance has only been available at reasonable cost for the past few years.
While Electric propulsion is a viable alternative to internal combustion power there are some specific issues with electric power that need to be considered.
Electricity and water do not mix well.
All electric drive systems are built to function in an aquatic environment but care must be taken not to damage any of the seals or components that protect and isolate the electric components from the water. Much care must be taken to avoid any kind of contact with propeller or underwater housing that may allow water to enter the system. Fishing line or any kind of rope that gets wound on the propeller can allow water to by-pass the seals and do internal damage to the motor.
Batteries require care
Batteries weather lead acid or Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM) must be maintained correctly. They should be kept charged at all times with an appropriate smart battery charger. All batteries have a life cycle and will eventually require replacement. We find that lead acid batteries if maintained correctly last 2-3 years and AGM batteries 3-4 years. Winter storage of your batteries is critical to their lifespan, they should be kept fully charged and avoid any potential for freezing by storing in a temperature protected location.
Maintenance
While Electric systems do not require the winterization or oil service that internal combustion engines do, they do require some care. Keeping your drive unit clean and free of barnacles, lake scum, weeds etc. will go a long way to extending its useful life. These build-ups can cause water leaks and component failures that may not occur on a clean engine. Periodically treating any pivot points or movable parts with a lubricant like WD-40 can keep your motor working smoothly throughout its life.
